Cricket Players
- A match is played between two sides, each consisting of 11 players
- By agreement, sides can play with fewer or more than 11 players but no more than 11 can field at any one time
- If a side is reduced to less than the original number of players nominated, the match continues as long as possible under the laws
Team Members
- Each captain must nominate their players in writing to the umpire before the toss
- No player can be replaced without the consent of the opposing captain
- Any replacement player is considered the same as the player they replaced under the laws
- A replacement cannot bat if the player they replaced has already batted
- Any penalty time/warnings applied to the original player carries over to the replacement
The Captain
- A deputy can act as captain if the captain is unavailable
- If the captain is unavailable to nominate players, anyone associated with the team can deputize
- Only a nominated player can deputize for the captain for things like the toss
Responsibilities of the Captain
- Captains are responsible for ensuring play is conducted within the spirit of cricket and laws
- This includes on and off the field, during and after the match
- Captains must promote respect, fairness and high standards of conduct among their players
Law 1 is about the key aspects around players, team members and the role and responsibilities of the captain to ensure matches are played in the proper spirit and according to the laws of the game. Upholding the spirit of cricket and sportsmanship should be the priority of all those involved.
